Science Department Dasmesh Punjabi Science Department offers general science courses for all intermediate grades. All science courses are taught according to the BC Ministry of Education Science curriculum. Our Department takes pride involving students in extracurricular science related activities. Our students have been selected for Canada- wide Science Fair. We are going into the fourth year of Vector Science Club. For many years our lower intermediate students have continued to participate in the Salmon Enhancement Program and Yale secondary Science Olympics. Grade 10 students continue to maintain strong Provincial Exam results. Chemistry 11 is linear, Physics 11 and Biology 11 are semester courses. Department Goals: - To engage students in hands on activities related to their prescribed learning outcomes.
- To give opportunities to students to participate in the School & Regional Science Fairs.
- To develop a scientific attitude & science process skills.
- To prepare students for the Graduation Program.
- To give opportunities to students to enhance their knowledge through science- related field trips.
Resources: All intermediate Science text books used by our students are BC Ministry of Education-recommended. Grades 6, 7, 8 students use the BC Science series. Grade 4, 5, 9, 10 students use BC Science Probe Series. These grade collections are supported by online student services. Their outstanding projects were selected for the Canada-wide Science Fair which will take place in Toronto this year: · Arbind Kaur Dhaliwal ( Mrs. R. Tiwana’s Grade 9 Honors Program) won for her project that focused on cutting down on the use of paper cups used in Tim Hortons etc. · Gurmeen Banipal and Charanpreet Mahal ( Mrs. Ghag’s Grade 8 Science class and student leaders of the Vector Science Club) won for their project on the potential of bacteria converting muddy water into clean water to produce electricity. · Wow! Out of the 9 students who were selected for the National Science Fair from the Fraser Valley, three are our current DPS students, and two more are our ex-students who left the Vector Science Club as a legacy for our School. So congrats also to Jasneet K Brar (also selected as one of the top 10 Grade 12 Mouat High School students for academics in Terms 1 and 2) and her project partner, Dalvir K Bhangu (Grade 12, MEI) Background History of DPS Students Selected at Regionals for the Nationals for Science Fair: · 2002- Grade 7 student Sukhdeep K Brar chosen for her project on diabetes in Indo- Canadians (teacher- Mr. Jaspal SinghDhaliwal.) · 2007 and 2008, Jasneet Kaur Brar and Dalvir Kaur Bhangu with their project on reducing waste, and the effects of plastics on landfills ( teacher- Mrs. Aman K Brar) · In 2011, Grade 8 students Charanpreet Kaur Mahal and Gurmeen Kaur Banipal and Grade 9 student Arbind Kaur Dhaliwal won the right to represent their region with their projects - see details above (Teachers: Mrs. Ghag and Mrs. Tiwana, respectively). Congrats to our Award Winning Teachers & Thanks to our Solid Department of Science Teachers, Students, and Parents: One of the secrets of Dasmesh Punjabi School’s success is the solid teamwork when it comes to Science Fairs. Therefore, congrats to each and everyone who participated and/ or won. The spotlight this time is on Science Teacher Mrs. Parm Ghag for winning the $100 Science Award for teachers whose students have gold-medal winning projects with national and international potential to make a difference.
