THE SCHOOL NUTRITION POLICY and DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
“BC sets National Standards in Promoting Student Health” (News Release on Sept 2007 by Education Minister Shirley Bond and Act Now BC Minister Gordon Hogg)
By law, junk food ( see below for definition of “JUNK FOOD”) has been eliminated from schools since September 1, 2008. Daily physical activity (DPA) is also compulsory in every school from this date. (Inspector of Independent Schools Regional Tour Meeting, Sept. 18, 2007 )
Please see Page 4 of your child’s Agenda for the main message in our Nutrition Policy. It states “The School will only encourage healthy food choices for children in our care.” Even on Celebration Days or class parties, students and parents will have to pick from the healthy food categories.
- All Homeroom and Class Teachers have the Policy document. Consult them or ask for a copy if you are in doubt .
- Information on what is not recommended (JUNK FOOD) and what is recommended is given to students as part of their curriculum now for their subject Health and Career Education (HCE). So you can compare notes with your child, if they are in one of the older grades.
The bottom line is to make sure that what you choose is NOT on the Ministry of Health’s “NOT RECOMMENDED LIST.” These include candy, fries, pizzas with double cheese and white-flour crust, coke and other sugary drinks with little real juice content, etc Portion sizes are also important. So is the frequency of what are on the “Less Recommended” list. Teachers will monitor to ensure healthier food and beverage choices throughout the year.
