Information updates on the new Honors Programs

CONTINUING ON THE PATH TO MAKING THIS A TOP-NOTCH SCHOOL:

This choice program will now be offered to students in Grades 9 and 10. There will be  Honors Programs in Science, Math and English. This is our preparation for the introduction of AP courses and exams in subsequent years. Our goal in this School is to support every child to maximize their potential. Regular subject curriculum will be enriched for students who aspire for academic and university studies later. Those who want more challenge in their Math, Science and English studies (and meet the criteria for Honors Programs) will find these courses a real plus. In fact, all hardworking students with a goal plan will benefit.

HONORS PROGRAM CRITERIA:

Grade 9 Math, Science and English

Student should have an 86% average in the Grade 8 course

• Student must have G (Good) or E(Excellent) for Work Habits in their Grade 8 Term 3 Report Card

• Student applies to be in the Program and agrees to comply with the work conditions/standards set by the Program teacher

• For Honors 9, student must show willingness to pursue subject-related activities beyond the prescribed learning outcomes of the curriculum

. • Grade 8 subject teacher recommendation

OR

If student does not have an 86% average in the subject, the following criteria will be added to the rest of those above:

• Student must score at least 80% in the subject in Grade 8 and get subject teacher’s recommendation

• Student must score 86% plus (A grade) in the Grade 8 final exam or assessment conducted by the subject teacher.

Grade 10

• Successful completion of Grade 9 Honors Program

OR

If the student did not take Honors in Grade 9:

• 86 % G.P.A. in Grade 9

• Recommendation from Grade 9 teacher.

NOTE: If a student decides to go back to a regular course, this must be done within two weeks after he/she begins the course.


Once a student is in the Honors Program, what must he/she remember:

  • maintain a term average of at least 85% (this excludes the 5% boost) for Science and Math. Teacher recommendation is required at the end of the term for English
  • have good to excellent work ethics
  • homework marks must be no less than 90% in each term for Science and Math. Perfect completion rate is expected for English.
  • no display of zero-tolerance behavior
  • missing assignments are to be completed according to teacher's requirements for students who may take extended leave.

Science Honors is an enriched version of Science 9/10 curriculum. Students will be expected to focus more on Science process skills involving laboratory experiments. Report writing, computer- based assignments and special projects will be the major part of the course. Towards the end of the course, a student will be given a marks boost of up to 5% on their final grade depending on the quality and completion of the assignments.

Mathematics Honors is an enriched version of Math 9/10 curriculum. Students will be expected to focus more on Math skills involving problem solving and research projects. Report writing, computer- based assignments and special projects will be the major part of the course. Towards the end of the course, a student will be given a marks boost of up to 5% on their final grade depending on the quality and completion of the assignments.

Towards the end of the course, a student will be given a marks boost of up to 5% on their final grade depending on the quality and completion of the assignments.
