THE SCHOOL ACKNOWLEDGES THAT PARENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE THEIR CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL FOR A SHORT VACATION. THE SCHOOL ALSO REALIZES THAT THIS TIME OUT FOR A HOLIDAY CAN BE A WORTHWHILE AND ENRICHING EXPERIENCE FOR THE CHILD.

However, because the School has to meet certain  Ministry of Education/ Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools  requirements, it  has the following policy in  place for any child who goes on extended leave:

    1.   The leave taken should not be more than 2 weeks

     2.  If leave taken is more than 2 weeks, then the student: 

• Should have completed at least 600 hours of instruction before May 15 of that school year.
• May require professional tutoring (not from the class teacher)  that will be recommended .
• May not  be promoted to the next grade level if, after the  class teacher’s or subject teachers’ assessments, the child is found to have fallen short of the outcomes that were essential for that particular grade level.

Reminder and Guidelines:

 Teachers’ plans, for teaching and assessment  for each subject area, are based on their overviews.  Each subject overview contains Ministry- prescribed outcomes that must be met at each grade level before a child can be promoted.  The assessments are continuous throughout the term. Therefore, it is very difficult for a teacher to give a work package to a parent.

The School’s recommendation is that you inform the teacher well in advance by filling in the EXTENDED LEAVE FORM (the same for all K-10 students).  The teacher may then be able to give your child related activities such as daily reading in English, writing a daily travel journal, practising computation skills etc. if it is a short vacation.  The teacher may also set up expectations  where you will need to assist your child to gain the new skills/concepts taught to the class while he/she is away.
