SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINE PROGRAM:
DPS operates on the philosophy that all students have the right to learn and grow in a positive school climate. We have in place a framework of rules and a code of conduct to ensure an orderly school. (Refer to your child’s Agenda).
Our 3-Level Disciplinary Program:
Level 1: Teacher-level. Good behavior is praised and rewarded. Class level consequences are in place for any minor bad behavior. Parent support is directly sought to correct any behaviours at this stage if the teacher’s professional training and experience show that this is warranted.
Level 2: Vice-Principal and Counsellors’ level: Parents must be more alert at this stage. This is when the School Warning Letter is sent home. A short suspension may be imposed if this is warranted.
Level 3: The Principal’s and the Disciplinary Committee’s Level. Zero-tolerance behaviors fall in this category. At this stage, the student will face a 3-5 day suspension or even expulsion. The School Police Liaison Officer may also become involved.
Our basic goal is to recognize that all students are children who need our guidance and support to be the best they can be. We count on parents to help us reinforce the positive behaviors that make a child successful in life.
At School, we use instructional strategies to maximize the growth of positive behavior and attitudes. For instance, during the Sikh Studies assembly every morning, moral instruction is given to students. Administration and staff select two to three school -wide rules regularly to emphasize and reinforce during these assemblies. Staff use their Health and Career Ed. (formerly Personal Planning) time to teach students lessons that will help them develop into positive and strong individuals in charge of their own destiny (as President Obama put it to all American children on Day 1 of school this year).
We are aware of the importance of teaching them to be global citizens who are equally proud of their identity. At our special school-wide assemblies, DPS students sing their school anthem (“Deh Shiva…”) and the national anthem, O’ Canada to inculcate school spirit and national pride.
Regularity and consistency have been crucial factors in the success of our Discipline Program.
